* Sanibel and Captiva Islands Restaurant Guide *

These are restaurants we've tried while at our beachfront condo in the White Sands building on Sanibel Island, Florida, near Ft. Myers. Our condo is available for rent by the week, so please click here to get to that page for more information.

- If you are staying at our condo you will find a three ring binder with menus for many of these restaurants in it, as well as evaluations left by other guests on their visits to those restaurants.
- Mileage given is from the White Sands condo (which is in the middle of the island, 4.25 miles West of the lighthouse) to the restaurant.
- Most restaurants offer an "Early Bird" special, which is usually a menu of smaller lower priced meals that are offered only for diners seated by 6pm.
- Please check with a restaurant before going there to make sure they are open. Some close on a particular day of the week, or in their off season, or just simply have gone out of business.
- July 1, 2003 a Florida law took effect prohibiting smoking in restaurants. Some of the following establishments may be considered bars though and fall outside that regulation.

On Sanibel Island

  • The Island Cow - Eclectically decorated in a cow theme with bright colors, this is a very casual and fun restaurant. The food was very good, with a very large menu including many sandwiches, salads, seafood, BBQ as well as a menuboard listing about a dozen types of fish available today, which you can have prepared a handful of different ways. Plenty of outdoor dining available in a quite wooded setting. Most sandwiches under $10 and entrees a bit more. Call ahead reservations accepted for parties of 8 or more. The kids enjoyed it.

  • Matzaluna - This is a nice contemporary Italian restaurant with a wood fired pizza oven.

  • Grandma Dots - Known for excellent seafood. Has water views and outdoor dining available.

  • Hungry Heron - Huge menu. Popular family style restaurant with tropical decor.

  • Island Pizza & Pasta - Good pizza, not much atmosphere, great option for carryout.

  • Doc Ford's - Atmosphere is based on the Doc Ford books by Randy Wayne White. He shows up frequently for book signings. Food is very good, casual atmosphere and moderate prices.

  • the Timbers - Casual nautical atmosphere. Very good food and service with moderate prices. They're known for both fresh fish and steaks, and they have a large fresh catch menu each day. The Timbers has been an island staple since 1978.

  • Subway - Chain sandwich shop at the center of the island.

  • Dairy Queen - This is the only fast food restaurant on the island, and it has been here since 1971.

On Captiva Island (it's about 7 miles from White Sands to the bridge onto Captiva)

  • The Green Flash - Excellent food and great views of the bay from most seats in this elevated restaurant. The food was great, and most entrees are just under $20.

  • Bubble Room - The eclectic decor has made this restaurant famous. This is the original one.

  • R.C. Otter's Pass on this one. The food was marginal (we had problems with two dishes out of seven) and the waitress was rude.
